Très beau livre, mais surtout très bon texte qui nous fait découvrir la personnalité d'un artiste rare et discret. Vous connaissiez les pochettes, découvrez l'auteur
Abdul Mati Klarwein is probably best know as the painter who created the album cover art for Santana's Abraxas, and for the album that defined fusion jazz, Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, both of which were released in 1970. This was my first exposure to his work-- I recall spending hours looking at the cover of Abraxas as I played that record again and again.I first discovered Klarwein's art as a larger body of work, however, a couple years later. I had the good fortune to be visiting a friend of mine one day; he showed me a book of Klarwein's art, titled Milk n' Honey. I totally flipped over this work, and have been a huge fan ever since.Klarwein was a "visionary"/surrealist painter who possessed an extremely high level of technical skill. In the second half of the twentieth century, the mainstream of the art world was focused mainly on abstract and/or conceptual art. Because Klarwein's art happened to be on some album covers, and because he ignored the prevailing trends of modernism, Klarwein was considered by the art establishment to be "just" a commercial artist or "psychedelic" artist, and was as a result rejected and ignored. Unfortunately, this situation still exists for the most part. You will probably never see Klarwein's work in an art history class, and although a few books featuring his work have been published over the years, sadly, they are all out of print. If you can even find a copy of any of them, they can go for hundreds of dollars. Now, with "Mati & the Music", happily we finally have a beautiful hardcover collection of much of Klarwein's best work. If you are a fan of his art, you have probably seen much of what is in this book. However, there will be things that you probably have NOT seen, such as an album cover he painted in 1955 featuring a reclining nude female figure. The paintings are presented so that you can see both the full painting by itself, and then how it was used on the album. In several cases (Abraxas, for one) there are some nice close-ups as well. This is a first-class publication; excellent printing on nice, heavy paper, good layout/design, etc. If you are a fan of Klarwein's art, this book is a MUST HAVE, and a steal at twenty-eight bucks.* * *Note: the text is not written in English; however, there is an English translation at the back of the book. A bit of an inconvenience perhaps, but it should not be a deterrent to buying and enjoying this book.
If you're a fan of album cover art you might want to read on. I've (once again) broken my rule of not reviewing something that's already been adequately reviewed, because I hate to waste people's time. But this book is deserving of more attention. If you've ever looked at the album artwork for Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew", Santana's "Abraxas", or Gregg Allman's "Laid Back" album (just as examples), and marveled at the artwork, this book collects those and many more examples of the artist Mati's artworks. The book itself is about the size of an LP jacket, with thick hard covers. The thick paper stock has a semi-mat finish which adds a bit of depth to his work. Along with the original pieces, included are segments of a number of Mati's work that really show the fine detail he incorporated into his pieces. For Westerners, there's an English translation in the back of the book--but you don't need much of an explanation when viewing Mati's work.I first noticed his work on LP albums by sax player Jackie McLean, rock band White Lightnin', the great jazz player Eric Dolphy, The Last Poets, jazz guitarist Joe Beck many years ago, and later albums like Jerry Garcia and Howard Wales "Hooteroll", and the jazz group Elements. And I have to tell you, seeing so much of Mati's work in something approaching a 12"X12" format is a real eye-opener. His work on LP jackets is pretty stunning at that size--another casualty in the era of the CD with it's small graphicsThe colors, the details, and the overall impact are pretty breathtaking. Even the details of various pieces, printed larger, are full of impact and wonder. The size of the book itself and the printing quality is for anyone (like me) who's ever wondered about the artwork on the above (and many more) LP jackets, and just who the artist is. Mati's name has never been a household word, but this book should (hopefully!) shed some much needed and deserved light on his many paintings. If you're a fan/collector of books on album jacket art (or the jackets themselves), this book belongs in your library. In it's own way this finely produced book can sit next to "Art Of The Dead", "Freedom, Rhythm And Sound", "Freehand-The Art of Stanley Mouse", "The Art of Rick Griffin", Jazz Graphics-David Stone Martin", "R. Crumb-The Complete Record Cover Collection", and any other similar books.
Received yesterday and i just want to thank the publishers for this gift to my ORBS!! i've been a huge fan of Mati's art since first seeing the iconic Santana and Miles album covers... this painters incredible facility and utter lack of fear at the "subject matter" his inner eye channeled was one of the visual joys of that late sixties/ early seventies era.... he's in a straight line of succession from Dali, Ernst Fuchs, and passed the torch to Robert Venosa... nevertheless, Mati's unabashed eroticism and crazed manic surfaces glistening with acidic dew and the milk of holy cows and the most sumptuous female forms ever commited to canvas (or did he paint on wood?... can't remember)make him my fave of them all.... just check out the sublime lady in the painting titled St John... hey, when i pass over into the imaginal realm after discorporating, i hope she's there to greet me.... painted in 1962, no less....a psychedelic goddess prior to the Kennedy Assassination(??).... and if you want to see how Mati was willing to stir the pot of social intolerance check out Tree of Life... OH MY MY... that one must have upset a few on first viewing... this book is absolutely beautiful and to see this artwork in a larger format than the available books is GREAT!! This was money well spent indeed.... some day i'm going to try to find an affordable copy of Milk 'n Honey from the early seventies but until then this will be my GO TO for a MATI FIX.
The language translation setup is kind of odd being in primarily french and spanish. I suppose that is more reason to learn one of those languages. The paintings are vivid and many of the larger pieces include close ups that really capture the intricacies. I recommend this book for any art/music/psychedelic soul lover. I am thoroughly enjoying it.
